No trip to Rome is complete without tossing a coin into the iconic Trevi Fountain, but this rite of passage for travelers to Rome might soon find this won’t be as easy to do as it once was. Rome officials are now considering a plan to implement tickets to access the fountain which, since its creation, has always been free of charge.

The plan intends to limit tourist numbers. Despite charging a small price of €2, these tickets mark another initiative by a tourist-heavy city to curb overtourism. Tickets would give travelers a 30-minute slot to enter the Trevi Fountain basin. Rome residents would continue to be able to access the fountain for free.

The plan not only seeks to limit the chaos associated with it but also aims to protect the 18th-century fountain. Proceeds from the tickets would go into protecting the monument and hiring staff to ensure safety and manage the flow of tourists.
