Many Americans head across the pond year-round for trips to Ireland, particularly the capital city of Dublin. However, several countries’ governments have issued warnings to travelers to Dublin in the near future in the wake of some recent knife attacks and riots.

Disturbances in Dublin began after a stabbing near a school left two young children hospitalized, leading to riots and resulting in the destruction of buses, police cars, shop windows and even a tram. Ensuing riots also saw violent encounters between police and rioters. While initial riots have subsided, Irish police warn locals and visitors of potential future riots and violence.

Irish prime minister Leo Varadkar spoke out against the violence but insisted the city was still safe to visit, as riots had been quickly contained. Varadkar emphasized the importance for businesses to return to normalcy as soon as possible.

That said, the U.S. Department of State, Canadian government and U.K. government issued warnings to travelers going to the city. The U.S. Embassy in Dublin released an alert Nov. 24 about the riots, encouraging travelers to avoid demonstrations and large crowds and be aware of surroundings.

Canada’s official travel organization urges travelers to stay updated on the state of riots and stay informed throughout their stay. Travelers are also encouraged to keep their belongings, including passports, secure. While high-tourist spots already see a fair share of petty crime, in times of protests, riots and violence, incidents increase.

As a result, travelers are also advised to carry photocopies of important documents instead of originals and avoid displaying wealth. This includes carrying large amounts of cash and not securing purses tightly to body.

Irish police commissioner Drew Harris calls the riots the worst public disorder “for decades,” with more than 30 people arrested so far. Videos also emerged of rioters setting fire to a Holiday Inn Express in city center near Parnell Street.

Specific locations within Dublin to currently avoid include the areas around Parnell Street East and O’Connell Street in central Dublin. Travelers and locals should expect a heavy police presence in the city for a bit as rioters have since dispersed.

There’s currently no urgency to cancel any upcoming trips to Dublin. Flights to and from Dublin Airport have not been and do not intend to be impacted by the riots and services continue to operate as normal. Public transport within the city, however, might be affected, as several buses and a tram were set on fire last week.

Escape to Tahiti for a Captivating Island-Hopping Cruise

The 118 islands of French Polynesia reveal themselves layer by fascinating layer, with the spirit of mana (vital force) linking them all the way from Tahiti to the remote reaches of the Marquesas. This is part of the world best savored on a journey that dives as deep into culture as natural beauty, both above and below the water’s surface. A cruise makes it easy to cover a lot of ground while unpacking just once (and sneaking in some work done in comfort, too, during at-sea days). And cruising offers particular appeal within this semi-autonomous French territory sprawling across nearly 2 million square miles of ocean and covering five archipelagos.

The Shelbourne Review

Facing the vast St. Stephen’s Green in the heart of Dublin sits the iconic and historic The Shelbourne. Few hotels master the perfect blend of history and luxury, but The Shelbourne gets it right. The site of the signing of the Irish Constitution in 1922 granting the Republic of Ireland its freedom from England, The Shelbourne has hosted its fair share of notable figures, from Michael Collins to Princess Grace Kelly to John Ford, the latter of which was the name of my suite.
