New Mexico’s biggest tourist draws include alpine skiing, art gallery walks, spas and significant historic sites from the Old West. Add to this list a constantly brewing, specialty craft beer-focused bar and restaurant scene. It has gained traction throughout the state … so much so that more than 100 craft breweries make up its Ale Trail, from Taos and Santa Fe to Albuquerque and down south into Ruidoso and Truth or Consequences. It is captured on a map for those considering making a pilgrimage of flavor.
Here are a few worth seeking out:
Downshift Brewing Company delivers a double dose of craft beer and inspired pub grub in downtown Ruidoso. Best sellers include the amber ale Campin’ Vibes; IPA Snowday, with tropical fruit notes; and Easy Does It dark lager. The Hidden Tap location can be found in a basement where beers are brewed, and is referred to as the “Cheers” of Ruidoso by its regulars. The Riverside location, a big, bright family-friendly spot, features sprawling patios along the river, an interesting pub-grub menu (including a New Mexican version of Canadian poutine), a live music room and comfortable spaces for events and larger parties.
Lincoln is a draw for history buffs thanks to its main street’s well-preserved buildings and folklore associated with Billy the Kid’s last escape. Co-owner and historian Tim Roberts not only offers colorful guided tours originating at the Bonito Valley Brewing Company but also brews such as Billy the Kid Pale Ale, L.G. Murphy Dry Irish Stout, 44-40 IPA and others inspired by the people and historical events that put it on the map. While some selections have found their way to a few bars, the museum/taproom hybrid is truly worth the trip.
The original location of the Lost Hiker Brewing Company is tucked away in a small industrial area near the Ruidoso Downs Racetrack. Although it now offers a Midtown taproom in downtown Ruidoso, one should visit the place of origin, given several of its selections have made the proverbial winner’s circle at the New Mexico Brewer’s Guild Stout Invitational in Los Alamos. Both locations also feature special arts and music events.
Founded in 1988, Santa Fe Brewing Company is the oldest brewery in New Mexico and continues to build its following with locations at the New Beer Hall at HQ in Santa Fe, Green Jeans Farmery, Tin Can Alley (trendy complexes in Albuquerque showcasing independent restaurants and shops) and three other locations. The food menus are packed with unique-to-the-state comfort food items that effortlessly pair with what’s on tap.
