Noted fin-de-siècle Austrian artist Max Kurzweil is the subject of the 14th Masterpiece in Focus series at Belvedere Museum and Palace complex’s Upper Belvedere in Vienna. Max Kurzweil: Light and Shadow explores an artistic legacy encompassing works of French Naturalism, Impressionism, Symbolism and Expressionism. A selection of easily recognizable masterpieces and rarely seen paintings and graphic works includes Kurzweil’s portrait of Therese Bloch-Bauer, who was the sister and subject of Klimt’s famous Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer. This will be the first public showing of the painting since 1908. Kurzweil, who studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts and the Academie Julian in Paris, had a famously chaotic life. Born into a haute-bourgeois family and married to a French bride who suffered from depression, Kurzweil became estranged from his wife and ended his own life in a joint suicide with a student who had become his lover. The two died of gunshot wounds in the artist’s Vienna studio while he was on leave from his position as war painter during World War I. He is remembered for his portraits depicting Viennese society, along with a series of nudes and Impressionist landscapes of Brittany, Italy and Dalmatia. The exhibition, curated by Markus Fellinger, is on display until Sept. 4.
