The Transportation Security Administration is testing new body scanners at Las Vegas’ McCarran International Airport. The scanners are intended to provide a less claustrophobic experience than current scanners.

TSA is trialing the new Advance Imaging Technology equipment in a partnership with United Airlines. The machines are set up at a special checkpoint area testing the equipment alongside other expedited security procedures.

The body scanners are wider than the ones most passengers are now familiar with at U.S. airports. Instead of requiring a hands-over-head pose, passengers stand with their arms out to the side for screening. The machines can process travelers at a rate of 200 per hour.

The new equipment eliminates the need to show a boarding pass as it incorporates a scan of personal ID cards to confirm identity and flights. New 3-D bag scanners also allow passengers to keep their laptops in their bags.

“The security piece … is one of the portions of that passenger journey that for all of us, even myself, can be nerve-wracking,” said Jose Bonilla, director, Innovation Task Force, TSA.

“We’re not just focusing on the next shiny hardware. We’re focusing on processes. We’re focusing on effectiveness, efficiency and utilizing those passengers that travel through those areas to give us feedback.”

If the test proves successful, the new equipment could be rolled out in other airports.
