The most famous ice-skating rink in the world officially opens this week in New York City’s Rockefeller Center. The opening ceremony featured performances by the first Americans to ever win gold for Olympic Ice Dancing, Meryl Davis and Charlie White, as well as young skaters from the Ice Theatre of New York and Figure Skating in Harlem.
The Rink at Rockefeller Center was built in 1936, and by hosting more than a quarter million skaters every year, it has become a much-loved fixture of winter in New York City. This year’s programs include Breakfast with Santa, Radio City Christmas Spectacular, Engagement on Ice and First Skate, in addition to the new late-night Starlight Skate.
The Rink is open daily for 90-minute sessions starting at 8:30 a.m. and ending at midnight. There are usually very long lines, so coming early in the morning is recommended for general admission. If you don’t want to wait, reservations can be made here.
Skaters can bring their own pair, but speed skates are not allowed, and there are figure skates for rent as well. For those new to skating, lessons can be arranged for $50, while veterans can purchase a season pass for $275.
