The town of Winslow is forever memorialized thanks to the popular The Eagles’ song “Take it Easy.” The American rock band opens one of its verses of the song with “Well, I’m standing on a corner in Winslow, Arizona and such a fine sight to see,” and Winslow now features a park aptly called Standin’ on the Corner Park.

While Winslow goes down in music history as the location featured by The Eagles, the historic town goes farther back in time than this. Situated in Navajo County, Arizona, the town embodies a quiet western atmosphere, reminiscent of the old western towns once buzzing with energy following the construction of Route 66, which ran through Winslow.

With a population of less than 10,000 people, Winslow may not be as glamorous as Albuquerque or even Flagstaff, but its charm puts it on the map as a must-visit place for travelers in Arizona. A day and night in Winslow promises some great sights and activities. Standin’ on the Corner Park features murals depicting the “Girl my Lord in a flatbed Ford” as featured in “Take it Easy.” The unique park also includes a statue of Glenn Frey, a member of The Eagles who passed away in 2016. Visiting the public park also entails seeing a large Arizona US Route 66 marker, serving as an homage to the historic highway that spanned much of the west.

Meteor Crater

Just outside of Winslow (about 18 miles) lies Meteor Crater, an impact crater from a meteor striking the earth nearly 50,000 years ago. A little under a mile in diameter, the impact site features several lookout points to take in the sheer size of the crater, as well as a visitor center detailing the events of the meteor, with interactive exhibits and displays for visitors to walk through and enjoy.

Back in Winslow, visitors can stay the night at the historic La Posada Hotel, which recently underwent extensive restorations. The hotel features a variety of rooms, some with patios and balconies, as well as a martini bar, garden and bookstore. The hotel’s restaurant, The Turquoise Room, offers contemporary Southwestern cuisine.

About 60 miles from Winslow, visitors can find the Painted Desert and Petrified Forest. Painted Desert draws tourists due to its colorful rocks, from bright hues of red to shades of lavender. Petrified Forest is an American national park and features large deposits of petrified wood dating as far back as 225 million years ago from fallen trees.
