Wine Touring in the Time of COVID

Last weekend, after a great deal of thought, research and planning, my husband and I and another couple who've been part of our decades-long wine tasting group decided to trek to Walla Walla, Washington, for that region's annual fall release weekend. We have attended many such events over the course of several years, when the area's wineries take part in the semi-annual release of their latest vintages. The first weekend in May is the partner to this autumnal event and draws a much bigger crowd, at the start of the summer travel season, to indulge in the world-class wines produced there. We've always enjoyed this quieter, more relaxed first November weekend compared to its exuberant spring sister. Harvest and crush, the most frenetic time of year for winemakers, have just wrapped up, and everyone in the industry seems happy to be able to take a deep breath, reflect on the season just gone and look forward to the coming holidays.

Making Plans for Future Travel

Over the past few weeks my husband and I have started to look ahead and make some plans for travel in the next year. Even while the coronavirus surges in some parts of the country and the EU may bar U.S. citizens from entering its borders in the coming week, we've decided to broaden our horizons literally and figuratively. While we aren't contemplating any major international travel or cruises just yet, we're certainly open to looking at some of the great travel deals out there right now and helping the travel industry bounce back.

Old and New

Our recent trip to the wine country around Walla Walla, Washington, saw us pack a lot into just three days. We scheduled visits to old favorites, enjoyed some special tastings and events at wineries where we are club members, and also made a point of trying out some new places. We were blessed with perfect fall weather: sunny and crisp, with the fields and vineyards showing their fall colors.

New Finds in Walla Walla

Barring the apocalypse, if it's the first weekend in November, you can be sure my husband and I will be in Walla Walla for the southeast Washington wine region's Fall Release festivities. This year we arrived early Thursday afternoon to get in some tasting before the crowds arrived on Friday, and we were greeted with rather chilly but sunny, hazy weather following our drive up the Columbia Gorge from Portland.
