Good Eats in Wine Country
Our annual treks to Walla Walla, Washington, are driven by the pursuit of great wine, but we always enjoy partaking of wonderful food at local restaurants there, all of whom focus on local, sustainable products and the freshest of ingredients. In the spring, one can be sure to find tender spears of asparagus on virtually every menu around town, as it grows abundantly here, and the peak of harvest coincides with Spring Release weekend.

Great Food and Great Atmosphere
On our recent trip to the wine country of Walla Walla, Washington, we had three fabulous dinners at restaurants which each represented a different culinary tradition while making use of regional products. For a small town of a population of about 33,000, Walla Walla provides visitors with an amazing range of great dining experiences, whether from a food truck at a local winery to casual local hangouts to fine dining. No doubt the presence of 120 wineries and the patrons they draw has a lot to do with such a wealth of good eats.
Positive Signs for Travel
Now that vaccines are available to everyone 16 and older here in the United States and supplies appear to be plentiful, folks seem to be feeling positive about the coming summer and looking forward to traveling again. Much still depends on a large majority of the population getting fully vaccinated, and polls and surveys indicate there is a sizable percentage that is still reluctant if not outright opposed to do so. Several states are actually seeing an increase in cases and hospitalizations these days, perhaps due to some people becoming complacent about safety protocols after so many months following stringent measures to curb the spread of the virus. Nevertheless, I find myself confronted with a wealth of anecdotal evidence that a lot of people are stretching their wings (or preparing to do so in the near future) and traveling again.

The Year in Review
Today I sat down to write our family's annual Christmas letter, the one that goes out with our cards to friends and family this time of year. On a whim, I pulled up last year's missive and read through it with a mix of emotions. Some of it seemed so long ago even while I realized that I'd written it less than three months before the "normal" world I described in it would be altered forever by the worldwide pandemic. How casually I mentioned going to plays and concerts; visiting friends and welcoming others into our home; celebrating holidays, birthdays and weddings; traveling near and far.
