Going on Safari
Last week I wrote about road trips, and then just yesterday I took a brief day-trip excursion with my daughter and grandsons. The boys are 6 and 3, so road trips need to be either short or incorporate many stops to keep them enjoyable for everyone. Our destination lay about 90 minutes from home, straight up Interstate 5 to the little town of Winston, set amid grass- and oak-covered rolling hills along a fork of the Umpqua River.

Road Tripping
Road trips are woven deeply into the fabric of the American experience as this big, open country and the independent spirit of her citizens lend themselves to striking out to explore all the varied landscapes and cities from sea to shining sea. One could say that grand tradition could be traced back to the westward expansion of the country, and that those pioneers in their covered wagons on the Oregon Trail provided a road map (excuse the pun) for all the modern-day road trippers to come.
Challenges and Blessings
Life in the time of COVID-19 certainly has me recalibrating many of the measurements by which I mark my life and the impact events and activities make upon it. For example, a quick jaunt to the store for a few items, once a ho-hum chore requiring a minimum of thought and no preparation, now requires a deliberate plan, preparation and consideration. Because I'm trying to limit my exposure to the outside world and the potential hazards lurking behind every stranger's cough, there really is no such thing as a quick run to the store every few days. No, lists are made, menus for a week or more are considered, ads are consulted, a route (between stores and within the stores) is developed . . . all before I even get behind the wheel.

Spanish Meanderings
Our last full day of our driving tour through Spain and Portugal took us on an intentionally roundabout route from Badajoz, on the Portuguese-Spanish border, to Talavera de la Reina, just a few hours' drive west of Madrid. We started off early, heading southeast toward the town of Zafra, where my husband had read about a few wineries we hoped to visit. The evening before, our friendly, non-English-speaking server at dinner, Maria, had grown quite animated when we told her that was our destination. With fingers curved above her forehead, she mimed a bull and conveyed there was some sort of celebration going on there. All the better!
