The leading eco-luxury wellness resort in Costa Rica, Tabacón Thermal Resort & Spa, recently unveiled its official Sustainability Report for 2020/2021, demonstrating extensive strategies across three focus areas: environmental management, corporate social responsibility and culture. Tabacón has been an economically responsible partner to its community, staff and suppliers all while continuing to protect, regenerate and promote the benefits of natural resources. This report lays the groundwork for sustainable plans in the years to come.
“We are honored to share our Sustainability Report and showcase how the Tabacón family faced the enormous challenges of 2020/21 together with care and optimism, and sustainability as top of mind in each and every one of our actions,” noted Marcel Stittner, general manager, Tabacón Thermal Resort & Spa. “These actions have built a strong foundation as we continue our journey and forward focus toward offering carbon neutral stays in the short term and carbon neutrality for the resort by the end of 2023 while improving mindful wellness offerings and promoting diversity and inclusion. As we continue to see successful growth year-over-year for the business, we are determined to leverage our success for the betterment of our community, guests and beloved Costa Rica.”
Sustainability lies at the forefront of the resort’s initiatives and the report demonstrates the ways Tabacón progressed in its reduction strategies through a combination of efficiencies and investments. Last year, the resort surpassed its goal of a 5 percent reduction in energy consumption and a 9 percent decrease from 2019, the last comparable year. Over the two-year period Tabacón has become 100 percent LED and began a Solar Energy Project with the installation of 836 photovoltaic solar panels.
Tabacón’s water supply is 100 percent derived from the natural springs located on property. The Arenal volcano naturally heats the hot water used at the resort, and the resort introduced a water usage monitoring system in 2021. The property demonstrated the use of downstream water protection and native landscaping during the renovation of the main pool area. The property consists of 353 hectares of rainforest where only seven are built upon and is home to an ongoing rewilding program. Since 2009, there have been more than 1,500 trees planted as part of the Plant A Tree program.

Nov 21, 2024Immerse in an Invigorating Thermal Journey at Scandinave Spa Whistler
The glittering green pines and burst of jasmine lake beyond almost made me forget about the aches in my legs that slowly developed after the promised hour-long hike ran into the third hour. And, oh, there were my hips, showing up to remind me I was no longer in my 20s. I didn’t mind, though, because the vision that surrounded me during our guided walk through Garibaldi Park to Cheakamus Lake in Whistler, British Columbia, with Mountain Skills Academy and Adventures proved worthy of a thousand postcards.

In this city of contrasts, glass skyscrapers stand behind century- old temples. Street food vendors sling steaming noodles along roadways while tucked-away restaurants serve multicourse, Michelin-level cuisine. Roadways jam with cars as jewel-toned tuk tuks whizz through the gridlock. Long considered a tourist mecca, Bangkok also makes for a dynamic, budding location for corporate travelers.

Nov 19, 2024Explore the Beguiling Towns of Sicily’s Val di Noto
Best known to tourists for the boisterous chaos of Palermo, the views of Mount Etna from idyllic Taormina, and for that capricious volcano itself, Sicily has far more to draw travelers. In Sicily’s southeast corner, one region encapsulates the Sicilian spirit that has seen it through conquest and natural disasters, a region less well-known to tourists but one of the island’s most beautiful and fascinating.
