Switzerland is opening the longest train tunnel in the world to enable passengers to travel under the Alps in 17 minutes. The innovative project by Swiss Federal Railways, called Gotthard Base Tunnel, is a dual-track tunnel that will bring northern and southern Switzerland closer together and cut travel time to neighboring countries.
Switzerland already possesses the densest public transport network on the planet, and the new masterpiece of railway extends 57 kilometers at a depth of 2,300 meters under the Gotthard massif, making it the deepest tunnel in the world, as well as the longest. The project took 17 years to complete.
The efficient, new railway allows people to spend more time discovering the majestic natural beauty Switzerland and its neighboring countries offer.
