Opera under the stars takes on new significance in the stunning outdoor setting of the Sferisterio of Macerata, located in Italy’s Marche region. The semicircular brick theater, designed in 1823, is renowned for its acoustics. From July 19–Aug. 11, the annual Opera Festival Sferisterio fills the space with the sounds of some of the world’s best performers. For jazz lovers, the 52nd Stresa Festival (July 19–21) offers five open-air concerts in gorgeous venues around Lake Maggiore.
In Venice until Aug. 18, the exhibition Manet: Return to Venezia fills the soaring spaces of the Doge’s Palace. Presented by the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia in collaboration with Paris’ Musée D’Orsay, the exhibit explores the artist’s relationship with Italy. From Aug. 6–24 at locations throughout the Lecce Province, Italy’s wildly popular Notte della Taranta celebrates all things related to the Italian folk dancing tradition known as Pizzica. On the festival’s final night, more than 100,000 people are expected to fill the streets of the village of Melpignano to dance to live music provided by orchestras and famous musicians.
