While much talk is given to the most on-time and most delayed or canceled airlines, a new study from MileCards explores the worst airports for travel, revealing those where you’re most likely to wait long times on the tarmac, or encounter lengthy weather delays. June is the month with the most U.S. airport delays overall, with just 75.4 percent of flights arriving on time, thanks to heavy tourist traffic and unexpected summer storms. Two airports stand out among the rest, though, with Newark (EWR) and San Francisco (SFO) showing the worst numbers for on-time summer arrivals (68.4 percent each). If you’re flying out of New York, it’s suggested you head to JFK, the best of the city’s three for on-time summer arrivals. The country’s best airports for on-time arrivals during the summer are named as Honolulu (HNL) and Salt Lake City (SLC). New York is also where you’ll see the most time spent waiting to take off after boarding. JFK and La Guardia (LGA) have an average taxi time of 28–29.8 minutes from the gate. These numbers are almost three times higher than the best airports, Houston Hobby (HOU) and Dallas Love Field (DAL), where you can expect to wait less than 10 minutes. Once arriving at the airport, however, you’ll taxi the most on your way to the gate at Los Angeles (LAX). MileCards combined all of the compiled data to give each airport a misery score, based on on-time arrivals, take-off wait times and landing wait times. The most miserable airport of all was Newark, followed by La Guardia, O’Hare (OHR), and JFK, which all tied for second place. The least miserable? San Jose (SJC) and Portland (PDX).
