“If we don’t have it, you don’t need it.” Augusta’s general store, Allen’s Manix Trading Post, jokes this is the overall mantra for Augusta, Montana. With a population of less than 300, Augusta, less than one hour away from Great Falls, about one hour from Helena and less than two hours from Glacier National Park, would appear as if nothing has changed since its conception in 1893, save for cars parked on the sides of the street and street lights situated in front of every other building.
In small towns, everyone knows everyone, and that rings true for Augusta. Buckhorn Bar, The Lazy B Bar & Café and Blue Pine Wine serve as the focal point for many conversations and catch ups among friends and family. Shop owners greet patrons to ask about the latest news, often in the town’s general store, or Latigo & Lace, a unique shop filled with artisan-made products, books, artwork and more.
At Buckhorn Bar, a cozy atmosphere greets customers upon entering. The ceiling features countless antlers lining the beams, some with hats and merchandise hanging from them. In addition to draft and local beers, the bar serves traditional, home-style dishes like steak, burgers and chicken sandwiches. Despite its name as a bar, the space offers something for guests of all ages, and its warm ambiance allows the community to catch up with one another.
Augusta offers many options for lodging, from an old-fashioned motel to vacation rentals to cozy Airbnb properties. In fact, Augusta and its neighboring area currently boasts more than 20 Airbnb homes and cabins, from an authentic, wooden cabin for two to a multibedroom home for families and larger groups.
Every summer, thousands flock to the small town for the Augusta American Legion Rodeo, one of the oldest rodeo shows in Montana. Live music, food vendors and exciting rodeo performances create a weekend of fun for all. Be sure to book accommodations in advance as they fill up quickly.
While the main street features the majority of the town’s businesses, farms and ranches dot the surrounding area, with fields spanning as far as the eye can see. Horses, cows, bison and even yaks graze these fields, with occasional large hay bales dispersed throughout the area. Homes center around these fields, many dating back to the early 20th century.
