There may be good news on the horizon for frequent travelers between New York and Singapore. Bloomberg reported this week Singapore Airlines is in talks with Boeing and Airbus and, if all goes well, the airline may be reinstating its direct non-stop service on the route.

Identifying it as a non-profitable route, Singapore Air discontinued the non-stop 19-hour flight in 2013; a move that added five hours to total travel between the two destinations. At the time, the airline was operating the non-stop route with an Airbus A340-500, an aircraft industry analysts suggested was not particularly efficient for long-haul flights.

Singapore Air currently flies to four American cities: Los Angeles (LAX) and San Francisco (SFO) via Hong Kong (HKG), Seoul (ICN) and Tokyo (NRT); New York (JFK) via Frankfurt (FRA); and Houston (IAH) via Moscow (DME).

While there’s no official deal on the table, aviation experts cited Boeing’s yet-to-debut upgraded 777X as the current market leader for long-haul routes. The aircraft can fly up to 9,300 nautical miles nonstop.
