If you’d walk a mile for a margarita, set your compass for Dallas. Inaugurated in 2018, the city’s famous Margarita Mile (multiple miles, actually, but who’s counting?) is a fun — and frosty — city-wide route featuring some of the best restaurants and bars in town.

In case you haven’t heard, Dallas is the official home of the frozen margarita, thanks in part to a little invention dreamt up by restauranteur Mariano Martinez half a century ago, known today as the frozen margarita machine.

About all that walking, feel free to cheat a little once you get to Uptown, where the McKinney Avenue Trolley can take you to several Margarita Mile locations. Restaurants with perfect margarita-nosh pairings include multiple taco establishments, such as Jalisco Norte in Oak Lawn, La Ventana and Meso Maya downtown, and Tejas in the Bishop Arts District.

Las Palmas

If limiting alcohol intake comprises part of your New Year’s resolutions for 2023, you can still take part in this classic local activity with a selection of delicious mocktails.

A few to try:

At Tulum, sip an artisan grapefruit made with soda grapefruit soda and Topo Chico; or a Jungle Juice made with passionfruit, cranberry and orange.

At Las Palmas, order a strawberry limeade or Mexican chocolate milk. At Jalisco Norte, try the ginger lemonade, made with ginger, agave and lemon juice; or a blackberry mint soda, created with house-made blackberry syrup, lemon and Topo Chico.

At The Rustic, don’t miss the Desert Pear Spritz, made with prickly pear syrup, fresh lime and club soda; the Hibiscus Mockarita made with hibiscus syrup and lime sour; or the Winter Sunshine, made with mixed citrus syrup and club soda.

Fearings

At Fearings, order a Facetious with coconut puree, pineapple-infused syrup and fresh lime juice; or a Fortuity, made with Navarro pinot noir grape juice, orgeat almond syrup, lemon juice and tonic.

Wondering how to arrange your own Margarita Mile experience? Participants must be at least 21 years of age. Next, go to the Mile’s official website and plan your own self-guided tour from a wide array of participating restaurants.

Hotel Van Zandt Review

One step onto Austin’s Rainey Street and you’ll feel like you’ve joined the cool kids at the best playground in the city. Just behind the cottage bars, pint-sized skyscrapers soar. One of them, Hotel Van Zandt, the Rainey district's pièce de resistance, beckons with a song-like spirit —apropos because the independently owned property, rife with music motifs, was named after beloved singer-songwriter Townes Van Zandt. Sixteen stories high, the hotel embodies Austin’s lust for music, manifesting with a vinyl corner; trumpet chandeliers; myriad musical references; replica vintage posters in frames; and its own live music venue, which doubles as its acclaimed restaurant, Geraldine’s. Don’t miss the mesmerizing installation of colorful origami-like birds composed from vinyl records that flitter from an old phonograph.
