Seattle Art Museum recently announced the extension of its highly acclaimed Calder: In Motion, The Shirley Family Collection exhibition. This is the first in a multiyear Calder at SAM initiative that celebrates the life, legacy and work of American artist Alexander Calder. Originally set to close on Aug. 4, the exhibition is now on view through Oct. 20.

“The public has been captivated by the Calder: In Motion exhibition. Visitors of all ages and backgrounds have enjoyed coming to the museum to see this stunning collection of Calder’s works, shown together publicly for the first time. Extending the exhibition was an obvious choice to ensure more people can experience this important collection and artist,” said José Carlos Diaz, Susan Brotman Deputy Director for Art, SAM.

The Shirley Family Calder Collection includes more than 45 seminal works representing every decade of Calder’s career. The second exhibition in the Calder at SAM initiative, Following Space: Thaddeus Mosley & Alexander Calder, will run Nov. 20– June 1, 2025. The exhibit will showcase large-scale wood sculptures of contemporary artist Thaddeus Mosley in dialogue with Calder’s hanging mobiles, a standing mobile and a wall sculpture. This will the largest West Coast museum exhibition of Mosley’s works from the last two decades and the first to pair his work with Calder’s. Select pieces from the inaugural exhibition will remain on view in an adjacent gallery through the duration of Following Space.

Escape to Tahiti for a Captivating Island-Hopping Cruise

The 118 islands of French Polynesia reveal themselves layer by fascinating layer, with the spirit of mana (vital force) linking them all the way from Tahiti to the remote reaches of the Marquesas. This is part of the world best savored on a journey that dives as deep into culture as natural beauty, both above and below the water’s surface. A cruise makes it easy to cover a lot of ground while unpacking just once (and sneaking in some work done in comfort, too, during at-sea days). And cruising offers particular appeal within this semi-autonomous French territory sprawling across nearly 2 million square miles of ocean and covering five archipelagos.
