Set on Dunnet Head overlooking a landscape of beaches, distant islands and moorland encompassing 1,800 acres of nature in Scotland’s northern Highlands, the spectacular 5-star estate known as House of the Northern Gate is now open to travelers.
Original construction on the property was completed in 1906, and the estate has been through incarnations that include a private home that once welcomed Elizabeth, the Queen Mother as a guest; a hotel; and a near miss as the recording studio for mega rock band Led Zeppelin.
In 2018, it was purchased and subsequently renovated by the Dunnett family, who contracted with skilled local craftspeople to repair and update its features. These include the use of Caithness stone and locally salvaged slate, along with the addition of a fitness center, movie room, games room, study and walled garden. Today, the magnificent estate sleeps up to 18 guests and is fitted with luxury textiles and options that include spa services, itinerary planning, luxury transfers, personalized yoga sessions and fully catered stays with a private chef.
While the setting may feel remote, there’s plenty to do. Guests can enjoy tours and tastings at whiskey and gin distilleries; guided excursions around the region; visits to historic castles and “brochs” (Scotland’s Iron Age stone towers); daytrips to explore Viking tombs; and watersports such as canoeing, paddleboarding and surfing (there’s even a surfing school on Dunnet Bay).
Other pastimes include golf at one of the region’s famed courses, including Royal Dornoch; shooting expeditions on the moorland; and salmon fishing on world-class Thurso River. The estate itself is home to three lochs, a wide beach and a hidden cave.

Oct 28, 2024Airlines Tout New Products and Services to Pamper Premium-Class Passengers
Is it worth it? The airplane is the same, we’re flying the same route, we will all get there at the same time. And yet some passengers paid considerably more for their seats than others. On an international flight, a business-class ticket can cost four times more than economy, and first class may be 10 times more. If you’re budget-conscious, it’s a no-brainer: Why break the bank for a journey that will only last a few hours? But for regular flyers, business travelers, celebrities and many others, the advantages of a premium ticket outweigh the cost.

Oct 28, 2024All Eyes Turn to Houston for Cultural Diversity, Great Eats and Economic Heat
When I first moved to Houston from Boston, I knew little about Texas’ largest city beyond Astros fandom and petroleum companies. To my delight and surprise, I was quickly smitten with Bayou City. After living through the merciless winters in New England, I rejoiced in being able to kick back on my patio in a t-shirt in February. Houston’s famous hospitality perhaps stems from its reputation as America’s most diverse city, a magnet for transplants ranging from Middle America to the most far-flung corners of the globe. And, of course, all that wonderful food doesn’t hurt — craft barbecue, mom-n-pop Vietnamese restaurants and fine dining rivaling New York or Los Angeles. I won’tshift my loyalty from the Sox to the ’Stros any time soon, but I’m darn-tootin’ glad to be in Texas.
