San Diego’s breathtaking landscapes, sunny weather and innovative spirit not only draw visitors to the city, but have also served as inspiration for writers, painters and sculptors, such as internationally renowned artist Niki de Saint Phalle (1930–2002).

Born in France and raised in the United States and Europe, Saint Phalle moved to La Jolla, San Diego’s seaside jewel, later in her life to improve her mental and physical health. Embraced by the local community, Saint Phalle created playful, vibrant, sacred and inviting oversized sculptures, all now on display throughout San Diego.

Experience Saint Phalle’s early work at San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art in La Jolla; the museum chose her as its first special exhibition after a major four-year renovation. The newly transformed SDMCA reopened its doors in April 2022, showcasing Niki de Saint Phalle in the 1960s. The exhibition, which runs until July 17, explores Saint Phalle’s early years by showcasing numerous works from European collections, marking the first time these works are on display in the United States.

Just up the hill from SDMCA is Saint Phalle’s towering Sun God, an exuberantly colored, 14-foot bird and a revered landmark on the sprawling UC San Diego campus. Sun God was her first outdoor commission in America.

For those wanting to see Saint Phalle’s elaborate mosaics while filling up on delicious Italian food, stop at Barbarella Restaurant in the La Jolla Shores neighborhood. Owned by Barbara Beltaire, a close friend of the artist, Saint Phalle’s distinctive style is seen in the graphic design, pizza oven and a vase filled with gladiolas above the open-air bar.

Balboa Park is home to two Saint Phalle creations. The Nikigator, a lively rendering of a dragon with its gleaming green mosaic tiles, is stationed at the front entrance of the recently revitalized Mingei Museum. At the museum’s west entrance is The Poet and His Muse, a sculpture that incorporates Saint Phalle’s use of the curvaceous female form to create something both lovely and sensual.

Another location for Saint Phalle’s work is downtown’s Waterfront Park, across from San Diego Bay. The park is home to an interactive splash fountain, green areas and three Saint Phalle’s sculptures: the mesmerizing Arbre Serpents, #19 Baseball Player and Element of Seals.

One of Saint Phalle’s must-see works, called Queen Califia’s Magical Circle, is a sculpture garden located in Kit Carson Park in Escndido, 35 minutes from downtown San Diego, and is definitely worth the trip to see.

Culture Runs Deep in the Old Town of Corfu

Corfu, or Kerkyra, as the Greeks call it, is arguably one of the most beautiful islands in Greece — and one of the most cultured. Part of the Ionian Islands located off the western coast of Greece and Albania, it boasts a storied history dating back nearly 3,000 years and a heritage shaped by many foreign rulers who made it their own.

Hotel Van Zandt Review

One step onto Austin’s Rainey Street and you’ll feel like you’ve joined the cool kids at the best playground in the city. Just behind the cottage bars, pint-sized skyscrapers soar. One of them, Hotel Van Zandt, the Rainey district's pièce de resistance, beckons with a song-like spirit —apropos because the independently owned property, rife with music motifs, was named after beloved singer-songwriter Townes Van Zandt. Sixteen stories high, the hotel embodies Austin’s lust for music, manifesting with a vinyl corner; trumpet chandeliers; myriad musical references; replica vintage posters in frames; and its own live music venue, which doubles as its acclaimed restaurant, Geraldine’s. Don’t miss the mesmerizing installation of colorful origami-like birds composed from vinyl records that flitter from an old phonograph.
