Sailing the Ionian Sea is an enchanting way to experience Greece’s breathtaking islands and pristine waters. Known for its favorable winds, calm seas and stunning landscapes, the Ionian Sea offers a paradise for both experienced sailors and those looking to explore for the first time. From lively beaches to secluded bays, these waters have something for every traveler seeking adventure and relaxation.

Begin your journey in Corfu, one of the most popular islands in the region. Known for its rich Venetian architecture and emerald green waters, Corfu is the perfect starting point for a sailing trip. Drop anchor at Paleokastritsa Bay, a scenic spot surrounded by lush hills and crystal-clear waters. Here, you can swim, snorkel or explore historic Corfu Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, before setting sail for more tranquil destinations.

South of Corfu lies Paxoi, a small island known for its idyllic charm and serene beaches. With its turquoise waters and quaint harbors, Paxoi offers some of the best spots for anchorage, particularly at Lakka Bay. Enjoy a leisurely stroll through the island’s olive groves or relax on the soft sands of Voutoumi Beach on nearby Antipaxoi. The island’s peaceful atmosphere makes it a must-see stop for sailors looking to escape the busier ports.

Further south, Lefkada awaits with its stunning coastline and some of Greece’s most beautiful beaches. The island is connected to the mainland by a causeway, yet remains an island paradise in every sense. Explore the famous Porto Katsiki and Egremni beaches, with dramatic cliffs and vivid blue waters. The island’s coastal villages, such as Nidri, provide charming spots for docking and dining on local delicacies while enjoying the view of the surrounding islands.

Continuing on to Kefalonia, the largest of the Ionian Islands, you’ll find an array of natural wonders. Sail into the sheltered harbor of Fiskardo, a picturesque village lined with traditional houses and waterfront tavernas. Be sure to explore Myrtos Beach, renowned for its striking blue waters and white pebble shore. Further inland, Melissani Cave reveals an underground lake that glows with magical hues when sunlight hits the water.

For a true off-the-beaten-path experience, make your way to Ithaki (Ithaca), the legendary home of Odysseus. Its rugged coastline, hidden coves and ancient ruins offer a unique blend of history and natural beauty. Drop anchor in Vathy, one of the world’s largest natural harbors, and explore the island’s charming villages, olive groves and walking trails that lead to breathtaking viewpoints.

Zakynthos completes the sailing circuit with its stunning beaches and vibrant nightlife. Famous for iconic Navagio Beach (Shipwreck Beach), Zakynthos also offers tranquil spots like Blue Caves, perfect for swimming and snorkeling in the azure waters.

Villa Petriolo Review

Tucked in the heart of Tuscany near the birthplace of da Vinci, Villa Petriolo is a luxurious countryside escape that blends historic restoration with modern elegance. A Small Luxury Hotels of the World member, the estate’s meticulous revival of a centuries-old villa and its surrounding properties transformed it into a haven of elegant design, hyperlocal cuisine and postcard-worthy moments. The seamless integration of its organic, regenerative agriculture revival, mimicking the once-bustling production of the property, influences its award-winning cuisine, wine production, spa products and amenities found throughout. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a single detail here that doesn’t speak to Villa Petriolo’s dedication to both the authentic past and hopeful future.
