If Russian President Vladimir Putin gets his way, there will soon be one seriously long train trip from London to Tokyo.
The line would run between London and Tokyo via the Trans-Siberian railway and would require construction of a 28-mile bridge allowing trains to cross the East Sea, linking Sakhalin, Russia, to Hokkaido, Japan.
The project is dubbed “a bridge across history,” because Russia and Japan did not sign a treaty after World War II.
“We are seriously offering Japanese partners to consider the construction of a mixed road and railway passage from Hokkaido to the southern part of Sakhalin,” said Igor Shuvalov, vice-premier, Russia.
The Trans-Siberian railway currently ends in Vladivostok, and the proposal would extend the line east to the Pacific island of Sakhalin, allowing trains to continue to Tokyo via Hokkaido.
