Settling into the massage chair, I instantly feel the tension from the first flight of a long-haul travel day slip away. As the masseuse works out the knots in my neck and shoulders, I exhale deeply and sink into blissful relaxation. The massage concludes much too soon, but it does wonders in preparing my body for the next leg of my journey. Refreshed and energized, I make my way to the gate for my connecting flight.
Jetting off for destinations across the country and around the world can take a toll on our bodies, from dehydration to increased stress and even depleted energy levels due to plane cabin pressurization. There are some things we can do to help ourselves when flying, like planning ahead and having the things that make us comfortable with us at our seats; drinking plenty of water before, during and after flights; and keeping the blood flowing while in flight by walking around the cabin and stretching in our seats.
If you find you have a longer layover on your itinerary and have access to the lounge of the airline on which you are flying, you may have the opportunity to incorporate some wellness into your travel day and maybe even indulge in a spa treatment while you await your next flight.

For example, those traveling in the La Première, business and Flying Blue Elite Plus classes of service on Air France are invited to relax à la a series of facial treatments in the Air France lounge at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City.
Through a partnership with French beauty and skincare specialist Clarins, guests are ushered into one of two private, cozy beauty spaces where they can choose from a selection of three complimentary 20-minute treatments that focus on relieving jet lag, detox and pampering the eyes. Designed for men and women, each of the treatments is intended to relieve tension and promote circulation and relaxation. Available exclusively to La Première passengers is the 30-minute Relax and Reset, another face treatment designed by Clarins for Air France.
In addition to JFK, Clarins face treatments are available in the airline’s newest lounge at Los Angeles International Airport, opened this summer; the Clarins spa treatment area opened in September. Business and Flying Blue Elite Plus passengers traveling through LAX can request treatments upon arrival in the lounge, while La Première guests can make reservations ahead of time by calling the dedicated number. The spa’s de-stress treatment is available exclusively for La Première guests.
Air France passengers traveling through Paris-Charles de Gaulle can enjoy services offered by French luxury brand Sisley-Paris in the airlines’ La Première lounge.
If you find yourself traveling through Dubai International Airport, seek out Timeless Spa in the Emirates Lounge in Emirates Terminal 3 for a reprieve from the frenetic airport. Inside you will find a tranquil space in which you can indulge in myriad spa and beauty treatments, from facials to massages and body scrubs as well as manicures, pedicures and blow-outs.

United Polaris passengers traveling through Chicago (ORD) can take advantage of the airlines’ new Reset Suite, designed in partnership with Therabody, in the United Polaris lounge. The Reset Suite offers a semi-private room in which you will find a Therabody Lounger that uses sound and vibration therapy for full-body relaxation. Theragun and RecoveryAir JetBoots are also available to support circulation and muscle recovery, and SmartGoggles help travelers feel more relaxed. Complimentary TheraFace skin and body care products enhance the spa-like environment. More Reset Suites are planned for additional United Polaris lounges in airports across the United States.
If access to an airline lounge is not in the cards, you may still be in luck, depending on which credit cards you carry. Select American Express card members have access to Centurion Lounges; and if you are traveling through Miami (MIA), Dallas (DFW) or Los Angeles (LAX), you are in luck: These lounges offer complimentary mini-massages and other spa therapies in the on-site Exhale Spa.
Chase Sapphire Reserve cardmembers have access to wellness offerings at Sapphire Lounge by The Club in Boston (BOS) and New York City (LGA). In Boston, travelers have access to a wellness area with anti-gravity massage chairs, along with guided, digital on-demand meditations from master well-being educator and healer Devi Brown. In addition to the meditations, Sapphire Lounge by The Club at LaGuardia features wellness rooms with treatments from Face Haus, a women-owned open concept facial bar, offering a variety of treatments by an on-site aesthetician.
Whether you have a few hours or a longer layover, lounges offer plenty of ways to look and feel your best upon arrival at your final destination.
