If volcano crater skiing is on your bucket list, fulfill that goal at Niseko Village in the Hokkaido region of Japan. Part of the YTL Hotels luxury portfolio, the village has a brand-new addition just in time for this snow season: Niseko-yo, with interior spaces featuring works by renowned artists Frank Woo and Emi Shiratori. Offering a soothing blend of traditional and modern experiences like shopping, dining and sports, this secluded destination becomes a seasonal wonderland in winter.
The annual snowfall reaches an astonishing 60 feet — and there are plenty of ways to enjoy it. For snow sports on Mount Niseko Annupuri, guests have access to groomed runs, off-piste terrain and the aforementioned volcano crater.
Working up an appetite is a must thanks to a staggering array of available dining options within the village. These include the new Gogyo Powered by Ippudo, providing ramen and creative small plates by day and a relaxed Izakaya dining experience at night. Yakiniku (grilled meat) and dim sum are menu stars at Long Tang (Dragon Hall). For sushi and tempura, book a table at Yang Shu Ten, or head to Moka for Italian favorites. Sichuan hotpot can be enjoyed at Chuan; or pizza at Baby Crosta, where guests can savor the village’s first pizza omakase, which allows Chef Yuichi to create a custom pie with the finest local ingredients.
Not to miss: the new Chuya teahouse at Higashiyama Niseko Village, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve property. The tea house menu offers heavenly sweet and savory treats during the day. After the sun goes down, the elegant space transforms into Chuya Bar by Night, where guests can indulge in a magnificent Taste of Asia experience that includes creative cocktails. Need more incentive? The private, Singapore-based Mandala Club invites members to enjoy the village’s Snow Parlour for ski-in, ski-out activities, along with music and cocktails inspired by Japan.
