In rural Bedford, Pennsylvania, in the center of the state, Omni Bedford Springs Resort easily outshines many other luxury properties throughout Pennsylvania, including many in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia.
The historic property was built in the early 1800s and has since hosted many presidents and celebrities. It’s the site of many travel firsts, including some of the first golf courses and indoor pools in the United States.
After a $120 million refurbishment, the property joined the Omni family and now welcomes travelers seeking a quiet, luxury respite in a remote location.
I visited the property in late February, traveling out to Bedford and finding the resort after driving through the tiny town and some countryside. It sits facing the heavily wooded hills, with expansive lawns.
After the valet took my car, the friendly staff showed me the way to the check-in desk where I was swiftly welcomed before being given a map of the property. The hotel is rather large, so you probably will actually need the map. Even the lobby itself is huge, the check-in desk tucked away while the rest of the space hosts plentiful seating, multiple working wood fireplaces, a library and the occasional puzzle set up for passing guests to add a piece or two, an altogether charming touch.
I reached my Premier Luxury Spa Room after passing the hotel’s retail shops and coffee counter, as well as the historic indoor pool. As you might assume, the Premier Luxury Spa guestrooms are those nearest the iconic spa.
My guestroom featured a large foyer before opening up into the main room, with a small desk, entertainment area, plenty of storage space and extra seating, the king-sized bed taking up most of the room. A set of doors takes you to the long, shared porch, with two white rocking chairs. While the frigid February air kept me from enjoying this outdoor space, I’m sure I would love it if I were staying during warmer months.
The bathroom is spa-inspired, with oversized everything and marble from floor to ceiling. There are double sinks, a walk-in rain shower, soaking tub and separate private toilet. All your luxury bath amenities are provided, including the signature toiletries that mimic those found in the spa.
Speaking of, one really shouldn’t visit the resort without taking a trip to the spa. Each guest enjoys access to the Bedford Bath ritual, which includes an aromatic steam, mineral deluge, whirlpool and cool plunge, all at your own pace. The experience takes a little over an hour and is recommended before your booked treatment. There are plenty of treatments to choose from, with seasonal treatments complementing your lineup of classic massages, facials, wraps and more.
In addition to the spa, the hotel’s indoor pool is also a must-try. It’s busy with families during the day, but it was mostly deserted when I visited in the early evening. The historic pool boasts beautiful surroundings and a calm environment, making it far different than any other hotel indoor pool I’ve seen.
The hotel’s dining options range from casual pub fare to a steak and chop house. During my stay, I sampled The Frontier Tavern, with its low-key, lively environment and menu of salads, sandwiches and pastas, as well as The Crystal Room, the upscale main dining room that serves a delectable breakfast daily, including a breakfast buffet with omelet station.
The historic Omni Bedford Springs Resort, as remote as it may be, is a shining example of elegant luxury and superb service and, if you’re traveling even within a few hours of Bedford, it’s not to be missed.
