Edinburgh’s efforts to become a hub for trans-Atlantic flights dimmed as Norwegian dropped all three routes between the Scottish capital and the United States. Norwegian also cancels its London Gatwick Airport–Singapore (SIN) service as of January.
Flights to Hartford (BDL), Connecticut, were dropped earlier this year, and a Providence (PVD), Rhode Island, flight ends this month. One final route, Stewart (SWF), New York, is expected to end in March.
Norwegian said the high rates of air passenger duty are to blame for its decision. A spokesperson said, “The U.S. routes had been launched with the prospect of a reduction in APD which was unfortunately postponed by the Scottish government and this has led us to fully withdraw our transatlantic services.”
An Edinburgh airport spokesperson said, “This is a desperately disappointing decision entirely caused by a complete failure of the Scottish Government to live up to its commitment to reduce the tax paid by Scots travelers.”
