Fifteen years after the shutdown of Nigerian Airways — Nigeria’s state-run airline — the African nation announced the reintroduction of a national carrier.

Nigeria’s Minister of State for Aviation announced the new airline, called Nigeria Air, at this summer’s Farnborough International Airshow. The airline’s name came from a contest among Nigerian students, with the tagline, “Bringing Nigeria closer to the world.”

In light of some locals’ concerns over the government’s ability to own and operate an airline, the Minister of State for Aviation noted the government will own less than 5 percent of the airline and Nigeria Air will be mostly owned and operated by private investors. Since the collapse of the previous national airline in 2003, the government struggled to relaunch its own airline and amassed substantial debt in its attempts.

Despite these concerns, officials hope to begin operations by the end of 2018.
