A new plan to renovate New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport will add two large international terminals, increasing the airport’s capacity from 60 million in 2017 to 80 million by 2035.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said the expansion project would make JFK, often ranked at the bottom of airports in the United States, “one of the finest airports in the world.”
The project is expected to cost $13 billion and will break ground in 2020. The first facilities will open in 2023, with an overall expected completion date of 2025.
The new terminals will replace the current configuration of six smaller, standalone terminals connected by roadways.
“There are more steps to go, but ultimately the goal is to have all of the passenger facilities interconnected,” Rick Cotton, executive director, Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, said.
Critics were quick to point out the project will not help JFK’s frequent delays, because it doesn’t build new runways.
