Valentine’s Day isn’t a holiday typically associated with too much travel, but that doesn’t stop Americans from taking to the skies each year looking for a romantic retreat.
A study from Allianz Global Assistance reviews the travel plans of Americans surrounding Valentine’s Day. Allianz, a travel insurance and assistance company, reviewed flights for two to domestic and international destinations on the weekends immediately before and after Valentine’s Day.
The most popular domestic destinations are New York City, ranking at No. 1, followed by Los Angeles, Seattle, San Francisco, Miami, Chicago, Atlanta, Boston and Las Vegas. New York City has held the top spot for three consecutive years. Miami and Phoenix, at No. 9, were new to the ranking this year.
On the international side of travel Cancún took the top rank for the fifth consecutive year. The list also includes San José del Cabo, Mexico City, Vancouver and Toronto. Nassau, Montego Bay and Oranjestad round out the list. Mexico City and Vancouver were new additions.
A few of the international destinations lie north, but most are in warmer climates to the south. The data for the study was compiled using passenger airfare booking information on sites that work with Allianz products and services.
