The Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice offers visitors the opportunity to see a comprehensive exhibition of the works of Josef Albers through Sept. 3.
Organized by Lauren Hinkson, associate curator, collections, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, “Josef Albers in Mexico” explores the work of artist, poet and theoretician Josef Albers in mediums including painting, printmaking, murals and architecture. Albers was the professor of arts and design at the Bauhaus, Dessau and Berlin; Black Mountain College in Asheville, North Carolina; and at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut.
Also part of the exhibition — illustrating the diversity of Albers’ body of work — are photographs and photocollages created by him following his many visits to archaeological sites in Mexico beginning in the 1930s. This inclusion of photography presents the least-known aspect of his overall work.
Albers traveled with his wife, artist Anni Albers, to Mexico and other countries within Latin America 1935–1967, feeding his growing interest in pre-Columbian art, culture and the enigmatic monuments found throughout Mesoamerica.
During these visits, he took hundreds of black-and-white photographs of pyramids, shrines, sanctuaries and other structures. Visitors can also enjoy perusing a number of personal photographs, studies and letters showcased among Albers’ works.
