Northern Ireland and Scotland welcome two new hotels in time for summer. Opening this July, Slieve Donard in Newcastle, Co. Down, brings history to the present day. The hotel occupies a building built by the Belfast and County Down Railway in 1898. The Marine & Lawn Hotels & Resorts property preserved the Victorian elements and details of the space while adding custom ornate wall coverings, tartan patterns and statement chandeliers.

Slieve Donard overlooks Royal County Down Golf Club, one of the oldest golf clubs in Ireland. Featuring 180 redesigned rooms, Slieve Donard incorporates color-blocked palettes with floral motifs throughout the guestrooms. Above each bed rests a wooden crest of the coat of arms of the railroad company that built the hotel.

Across the Irish Sea and in the heart of the Scottish Highlands, the new Dornoch Station hotel will be a golfer’s haven. Slated to open this August, the property lies a short distance from the first tee of Royal Dornoch Golf Club. The hotel’s design draws influences from the Highlands, hunting cabins and lodges around Loch Ness. The hotel’s lounge sees Royal Dornoch Golf Club tartan adorn the walls, surrounding a snooker table. Nods to local golf heritage can be seen even in the smallest of details, from the lamps on nightstands to sketches on walls.
