Natural Habitat Adventures, a figurehead in sustainable ecotourism and the conservation travel partner of World Wildlife Fund, recently added the Alaska Bear Camp to its latest offerings. Beginning and ending in Homer, Alaska, this four-night, five-day trip will run May 24–Aug. 23.

The adventure centers around Alaska’s brown bears, immersing guests into the Alaskan wilderness and the lives of these great animals. In addition to helping preserve and protect crucial bear habitat, guests will also have the opportunity to view bears up close in an intimate context.

“The camp’s location makes it unique enough, but what is truly special is the presence of brown bears—lots of them,” said Ben Bressler, founder and president, Natural Habitat. “It’s an extraordinary experience available to very few —and our being there is important to the future of the bears, which continue to face potential threats from mining, oil and gas development.”

Beginning with a privately chartered bus plane over Cook Inlet, guests can see some of Alaska’s best natural phenomenon from the sky, from glaciers to snow-clad volcanoes. Guests will land on the beach next to the camp, a 20-acre area of private land within Lake Clark National Park.

Alaska contains almost 95 percent of America’s brown bear population, and Lake Clark National Park yields essential habitat sustained by the region’s salmon runs. With the camp sitting in the middle of this region, bears are often on view directly in front of the camp and on the shoreline and surrounding meadows.

The camp is furnished with all of the modern amenities needed for a comfortable stay. With the ability to accommodate up to 14 guests, the spacious, weatherproof tent cabins sit on elevated decks, each with their own heaters. With cozy beds and hot showers in a shared bathhouse, guests can stay warm in the middle of the Alaskan wilderness. The resident chef crafts delicious dishes utilizing fresh local seafood and other regional fare for each meal.
