It’s Music And Berry Season On Newfoundland’s Fogo Island

Sep 1, 2013
Daily / Exclusive

When it comes to maximizing dramatic architecture and breathtaking sea views, Fogo Island Inn on Newfoundland’s northeast coast is right on the money. Perched atop stilts and shaped like an elegant X, the new and oh-so-modern silhouette of Fogo Island Inn seems perfectly suited to the jagged coastline. Wood-burning fireplaces, wood-fired sauna, cozy cinema and rooftop hot tubs keep the chill at bay, while the inn’s partnership with Fogo Island Arts help to keep the island’s culture and ecology alive and flourishing. Each of the 29 guestrooms features handcrafted furniture and textiles, along with enormous windows and unbroken views of the sea.

Fogo Island is part of a larger archipelago that’s easily accessible via ferry and charter plane, located in a unique zone known as Iceberg Alley at the continent’s tip. Visit Sept. 13-15, when musician Alan Doyle inaugurates the island’s berry season with a two-night music and food fest, (Go) Wild with Alan Doyle. Along with accommodations and all meals, the weekend includes a Friday night “local talent” bonfire gathering, and a Saturday morning foraging session for marshberries, blueberries, partridgeberries and wild mushrooms in the company of Doyle and Executive Chef Murray McDonald. Saturday evening, guests enjoy a “boil-up” meal cooked over an open fire and a musical performance by Doyle. Rates, based on double occupancy, begin at $1,675.

Corendon Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, A Tribute Portfolio Hotel Review

There are a few words that come to mind when the subject of airport hotels comes up. Usually, fun, cute and lively aren’t on that list. When general manager Evgeny Vreijling or his team members welcome guests, they insist Corendon Amsterdam Schiphol Airport is not an airport hotel but a hotel that happens to be near the airport. He also emphasizes that, while Amsterdam is regarded as the gateway to Europe, the hotel was designed to be a gateway to the rest of the Netherlands.
