As Munich expands and evolves, its earlier, historic structures are complemented by new, modern architecture meeting a variety of needs. Whether you book a walking architecture tour or plan your own itinerary, here are a few favorites you may happen to see. The Lenbachhaus is a gallery showcasing contemporary art, particularly expressionism. Founded in the first part of the 20th century, a new design was unveiled in 2013. While many of the original architectural themes are still on display, the new additions enhance historic features while creating a more visitor-friendly space and a striking new partial exterior made up of copper and aluminum alloy tubing, which will naturally weather over time. Another contemporary art gallery with a remarkable new exterior is the Museum Brandhorst. Opening in 2009, the two-story building boasts a vibrant shell made up of 36,000 ceramic panels in an array of 23 colors. A popular stop for architecture fans is Olympia Park, which offers architectural tours each month. The playful, mid-1900s design features rippling, seemingly floating structures combined with a large membrane. The project is meant to reflect the surrounding landscape, including the Alps, and the 1972 Olympic motto — the Happy Games. Another great spot is Allianz Arena. While some may see it as a mere soccer stadium, the design was carefully considered to include both functionality and allure. The eye-catching exterior includes more than 2,500 panels, each capable of separately illuminating in white, red or blue. A more recent architectural project in the city is the new Siemens headquarters, opened over the summer. Meeting the highest possible sustainability standards, it creates a development open to the public, with green space, event space and dining. It also offers a connection between Munich’s historic center and museum district.
