Mexico City International Airport will probably not be completely replaced, but instead could soon see an expansion in the form of a new terminal.
Mexico City Daily reports Mexico City Airport Group developed plans to add a third terminal to the airport’s current design, with the possibility of a fourth down the line. Construction will also start on the $4.1 billion Santa Lucia Airport, which also serves the Mexican capital, next month.
The change in governments in Mexico apparently derailed plans to completely replace MEX with a $13 billion facility on another stretch of land. Construction halted on the partially completed new airport in Texcoco.
GAMC CEO Gerardo Ferrando said the new terminal would be for arriving passengers only and would be designed to ease overcrowding at the current airport.
“There are certain discomforts at T1 and T2, that’s why T3 is coming and eventually T4. Everything that will be done is for greater comfort,” he said
Toluca International Airport, also located in the Valley of Mexico, would help meet rising demand for air travel. GACM is moving to acquire control of Toluca.
