The UNESCO World Heritage site of Hegra — known also as Mada’in Salih — in Saudi Arabia is the setting for the archaeological remains from the Nabataean Kingdom, including 111 ancient tombs, many of which are beautifully decorated. This unique historic site is the location of The Chedi Hegra, built on the ruins of Hegra Train Station in AlUla. Now, visitors can immerse themselves in the setting with a stay in extraordinary luxury at the new hotel.

“The opening of The Chedi Hegra represents a significant moment in the ongoing development of AlUla as a must-visit heritage and cultural destination,” said Phillip Jones, Chief Tourism Officer, Royal Commission, AlUla. “This unique property, conceived from the ruins and romance of one of history’s most significant rail routes, offers visitors the rare opportunity to experience the UNESCO site of Hegra at all the most magical hours. This boutique property is the epitome of AlUla’s vision to be a leading tourism destination that prioritises sustainable place-making and preserves the culture and natural beauty of the region. We are excited to see The Chedi Hegra become an integral part of AlUla’s journey.”
Managed by General Hotel Management Ltd., this property features 35 guestrooms, suites and villas, with stunning views of the rock formations part of the surrounding desert vista. Architectural features include original stone walls, private terraces and plunge pools.

For dining, choices include all-day Mediterranean fare in Prima Classe, where locally sourced ingredients star on the menu. At night, the space is transformed to Golden Hour Lounge, where diners can gaze on Locomotive 964, a rare, restored model crafted in 1906 by Arnold Jung Lokomotivfabrik. High tea service and international dishes can be enjoyed at Al Mahattah Lounge, while in-house storyteller Rawi entertains with desert tales. Guests can also participate in hands-on workshops on brewing, roasting and cup decoration while enjoying a selection of authentic Saudi coffees.
This year, three culinary additions will include romantic Al Mokhtasar, where themed feasts such as “Madfoon” will be served to the accompaniment of live entertainment and storytelling. Private rooms, a rooftop and a terrace with sweeping views of the desert will be highlights at Al Qala’ah, while fine dining under the stars will feature at Al Mawrid.
