Since its 1940 discovery in southwest France by a quartet of French schoolboys and one pet dog, the Lascaux Cave has remained a phenomenon. Upon the cave’s wall are prehistoric painted frescoes of animals including horses, cats, ibex, bulls, a rhinoceros — and a unicorn. Along with the animals are representations of human figures and assorted signs that remain a topic of interpretation and debate among archaeologists and other experts.
An international exhibition of replica paintings of five frescoes from the cave’s Nave and Well Scene, reproduced to the tiniest detail, and accompanied by cutting-edge digital technologies, recreate the experience of visiting the unique UNESCO World Heritage site in person. Scenes From the Stone Age: The Cave Paintings of Lascaux is on view until March 23 at The Houston Museum of Natural Science. In addition to the replica paintings, the exhibition includes interactive terminals, 3D projections, a virtual tour of the cave, and a large-scale model of the cave.
