Many travelers are unaware Niagara is more than just world-famous waterfalls — or that autumn is an excellent time to explore the region. Since the falls are the main attraction, start with a Voyage to the Falls Boat Tour, taking in Niagara Gorge, American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls, with dynamic views of legendary Canadian Horseshoe Falls. Boats depart from the Lower Landing in the Great Gorge. New Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours blend the best of whitewater rafting with sightseeing during splashy Wet Jet Boat Tours — or you can opt for the dry option in a boat protected by a glass dome. Whatever your choice, boats launch from Water Street in Lewiston (safety-regulated height and age limits apply to participants).

Helicopter excursions provide a whole new experience of the waters, and a trip up Niagara Falls Incline Railway gives access to Table Rock Center via the Bridge of Flowers pedestrian crossing over Niagara Parkway. From here, visitors can embark on Journey Behind the Falls. This year-round experience begins with a 125-foot descent via elevator through native bedrock to a short tunnel leading to two observation decks and two portals behind the cascading waters.

The Niagara Falls area is also home to a number of wineries, distilleries and breweries. Take a tour and enjoy a tasting at the 35-hectare Château des Charmes wine estate, founded by fifth-generation winegrower Paul Bosc; settle in at the tasting bar at castle-like Monastery Cellars; or enjoy a craft brew at Niagara Brewing Company.

When you’re ready to call it a day, local lodging choices include Old Stone Inn Boutique Hotel, with 110 individually designed guestrooms; Sterling Inn & Spa, with a full-service spa and fine-dining restaurant; and Cannery Lofts, with 41 loft-style spaces boasting 12-foot exposed ceilings and full kitchens.

Be sure to circle back to the water for a night visit to witness the Falls Illumination. Each night of the year, lights emanating from three separate points transform the roaring waters into a magical, radiant display. For night owls, there’s even a 2 a.m. show.
