Kimpton’s Hotel Monaco in downtown Portland offers an ideal home base for travelers to this ever-hip Oregon city.
Conveniently located, hotel visitors have easy access to the Willamette riverfront and attractions like Powell’s Books, the Portland Saturday Market and the Pearl District’s many shops and restaurants. They’re all an easy stroll from the hotel’s front door.
The hotel’s quirky décor is the result of a 2012 makeover. Among a slew of accolades, the Monaco was named “Most Beautiful Hotel in Oregon” by Architectural Digest and ranks in the top three hotels in Portland on TripAdvisor.
The circa-1912 building’s charms unfold from the lobby, with its eclectic furnishings and air of playful elegance, from the deep red walls to the mix of bold patterns and oversized lamps. Here, guests have access to nightly live music and free drinks of local beer, wine and spirits. There’s morning coffee and tea service, and evening nightcaps of a local spirit paired with a sweet treat.
The hotel’s other amenities are special packages for pet owners, in-room spa treatments, loaner cruising bikes perfect for a ride along the river and free WiFi. Should you come with a fuel-efficient vehicle, you receive half off the 24-hour valet service.
The hotel’s 221 rooms and suites are spacious, covering 300–850 square feet with décor that carries over from the lobby’s playfulness: wallpaper with native birds or architectural elements, leather headboards, bold colors and patterns. Each room comes with a yoga mat and access to a slew of exercises via an on-demand television library, plus an umbrella for dealing with that famous Pacific Northwest rain.
If the freebies aren’t cutting it, the hotel’s resident Red Star Tavern has you covered for three meals a day, plus an extensive drinks menu. The happy hour was named among the best in Portland in 2016 by Food & Wine — in addition to the solid menu, it’s quite long, 2–6 p.m., and again from 10 p.m. to close each day. The polished plates use local sourcing and inspiration, with recent dishes like spicy deviled eggs with lamb bacon; pan-fried oysters with truffle and celeryroot slaw; fried cauliflower with vandouvan mayonnaise; roasted half chicken with broccolini and cheddar grits, and an autumn risotto with foraged wild mushrooms.
Another element of Hotel Monaco’s stellar reputation is harder to quantify: the staff’s friendliness and willingness to help their guests. This consistently high level of service is frequently cited in positive reviews, and it goes a long way to putting the icing on a lovely cake.
