Closed since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the 5,000-year-old site of Maeshowe on the Orkney Islands officially reopened to the public. Its opening allows visitors to explore one of the finest Neolithic structures in northwest Europe once more.
Part of the Heart of Neolithic Orkney World Heritage site, Maeshowe comprises a long and low entrance passage leading to a large central chamber. This main chamber branches into a number of side cells featuring graffiti carved into the walls more than 1,000 years ago by Vikings.
Open from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., guests can visit the Visitor Center and join one of the hour-long guided tours. The tours run at 10 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. These guided tours include transportation from the Visitor Center in the nearby Stenness village. The reopening of Maeshowe means an increase in visitors to the site, and, due to limited capacity, visitors are recommended to book tickets online.
