Going Global: Letter from the Editor

Globility: The quality of being open to a world of cultures and experiences.

It’s a term Global Traveler publisher and CEO Francis X. Gallagher coined more than a decade ago as we were launching our first issue.

I’ve been thinking about globility quite a bit lately. Ten years ago, it was a fun catch phrase we used to define our mission, but it’s become so much more. Globility has become our essence as we’ve expanded our horizons to include China Global Traveler and eFlyer Asia.

Follow the GT staff on Twitter and you’ll see we’re as readily spread to the far corners of Earth as gathered at World Headquarters on any given day. Dinner in New York City followed by a breakfast meeting in Dubai? It’s a typical day.

The same holds true for our stellar team of contributors. In this issue alone, you’ll travel to the Balearic Islands with Barbara Radcliffe Rogers and check out the meetings scene in the Caribbean with Dale Leatherman. Allison Voigts offers tips for entertaining business clients in Sydney, and Victoria Abbott Riccardi savors time spent in Italy’s Dolomites. Kimberly Krol explores the nightlife in Warsaw. Richard Newton showcases Seoul and checks out a neighborhood in Addis Ababa, while Tim Leffel follows business with pleasure in Nicaragua, and Ron Kuhlmann takes us to San Francisco. And in the spirit of globility, Stephen Jermanok lays out the rules for securing travel visas, and Karin Leperi explores the connection between respecting cultural differences and succeeding in international business deals.

Globility: The quality of being open to a world of cultures and experiences — it’s a beautiful thing.

Coffee Warehouse in Rotterdam to Be New Home of Dutch Photo Museum in 2025

There is no doubt Rotterdam is one of Europe’s most design-friendly cities, especially when it comes to restoring historic buildings for modern uses. One example is the early 20th-century Pakhuis Santos, the Santos “coffee” Warehouse in Rotterdam’s port area. This former coffee warehouse is currently being transformed into the new home of Nederlands Fotomuseum (Dutch Photo Museum) and will reopen to the public in mid-2025. The architectural firms involved in the design and transformation include Renner Hainke Wirth Zirn Architekten from Hamburg, together with WDJARCHITECTEN from Rotterdam.

Where to Celebrate New Year’s Eve in the United States

When you hear New Year’s Eve and “party” in the same sentence, your mind likely goes straight to New York City’s Times Square, where the iconic ball drop marks the end of a year and the start of another. Watching this exciting event from the comfort of your living room is much different than actually being there, and it’s no secret a trip to New York City for New Year’s Eve is quite pricey, not to mention crowded … very crowded.
