Geneva Airport Has New Baggage Robot

Jun 12, 2016
Daily

The unpleasant business of lugging your baggage across a massive airport from security to your gate is sometimes reason enough to check that rollaboard. New technology at Geneva Airport is hoping to make that experience a thing of the past. Last month, passengers were able to test out the airport’s newest technology, a robot named Leo — after Leonardo da Vinci. The fully autonomous, self-propelled robot can check in bags, print luggage tags and carry up to two suitcases (maximum weight 35 kilograms). The robot has an obstacle-avoidance system allowing it to navigate high-traffic areas without bumping into passengers. The Geneva Airport robot is a product of airline technology company SITA, aiming to automate the entire airport experience. Travelers can utilize the baggage robot by using the touchscreen and dropping bags inside. “After the passengers have scanned their boarding passes, the luggage tags are printed and can be attached to the bag. With the bags loaded and tagged, the compartment door closes and Leo displays the boarding gate and departure time. Leo then takes the bag directly to the baggage handling area where they are sorted and connected to the correct flight. The doors of the robot can only be reopened by the operator unloading the baggage in the airport,” SITA says. Newsletter sign-up
