World-renowned British conservationist David Bellamy once said, “The best example of conservation of biodiversity I have ever seen – Grootbos says it with flowers.” At Grootbos, one knows that he has discovered a truly exceptional nature destination.
Situated less than two hours from Cape Town and overlooking the spectacular Walker Bay, Grootbos encapsulates brilliant service, warm hospitality, utter luxury, excellent cuisine and fine South African wines, but also a unique environment of conservation and human development.
The Eden Project in Cornwall has adopted Grootbos as a major partner in its quest to develop its South African domes display and promote the link between people and plants internationally. Fundamental to this ethos is the amazing diversity of flowering plants on Grootbos. Protecting more than 6,100 acres of unique Cape Floral Kingdom with more than 750 species of indigenous flowering plants, a walk, horseback ride or four-by-four drive through Grootbos Nature Reserve offers young and old an introduction to nature’s subtle nuances.
Besides the incredible floral kingdom, Grootbos has many other activities to offer, including birding, whale watching, diving with great white sharks or relaxing on unspoiled beaches. Grootbos has it all.
From the beginning, the owners of Grootbos have been committed to the conservation of the region’s biodiversity, as well as the betterment of local communities. The non-profit Grootbos Foundation was established in 2004 to run the Grootbos environmental and social development program. The foundation’s mission echoes its core beliefs, as it is dedicated to the conservation of biodiversity at and the development of sustainable nature-based livelihoods through ecotourism, research, management and education.
Funds generated by the Grootbos ecotourism business, together with donations from guests and other donors, are invested into implementing key conservation and development projects. In this way, all Grootbos guests are directly supporting biodiversity conservation and social betterment in the Walker Bay region. The Foundation also aims to run most of its projects as self-sustaining entities that generate their own income through the sale of homegrown products.
At Grootbos, you will feel welcomed to a truly unique place where conservation, social responsibility, luxury and relaxation have found the perfect home.
