London’s Gatwick Airport opened the world’s first airport gin distillery this month. The Nicholas Culpeper is located in the North Terminal and will also offer dining, in addition to drinks. The distillery will produce its own one-of-a-kind gin, The Nicholas Culpeper London Dry Gin, distilled from Chinese Cassia bark and Indian Angelica root and made in 12-liter batches. The recipe was created by the venue’s master of gin, Matthew Servini, who specializes in gin recipes from the 16th and 17th centuries. Each bottle will include its batch number, production date and the signature of the distiller on duty.
The distillery is a joint effort between Gatwick Airport and The Restaurant Group, a result of the rise in premium gin sales over the last five years. Currently, premium gin accounts for 40 percent of Gatwick’s gin sales, a 30 percent increase.
“Our latest dining innovation, The Nicholas Culpeper, with its on-site gin distillery, continues our transformation of the in-airport experience. This unique addition represents a diversification of the dining options available for our customers, challenging expectations of the quality and range on offer to enjoy at an airport. Our passengers are increasingly turning to more premium products and with the introduction of The Nicholas Culpeper, we have risen to the challenge, so our passengers’ holidays truly start in the airport,” said Spencer Sheen, head of retail, Gatwick Airport.
