The western United States isn’t the only region brimming with Indigenous travel. In the southeast, Mississippi owes much of its lasting and lively culture to the rich Indigenous heritages that shaped it into the state it is today. From the food to the language to the traditions, Mississippi was once home to the widest variety of Indigenous tribes in the region.

For travelers seeking a meaningful experience celebrating and supporting communities continuing the legacy of Mississippi’s first peoples, consider these enriching experiences:

In Pearl, the Chahta Immi Cultural Center immerses visitors in the culture and traditions of the state’s most populous tribe, the Choctaw. Here, you’ll see Choctaw pottery and the revitalization of this artform, learn about the Choctaw language, discover other tradition artforms and explore the history and culture of the tribe.

In summer, the annual Choctaw Indian Fair occurs on Choctaw homeland, where the World Champion Stickball Games occurs. The fair also includes tribal music, dancing and the chance to enjoy traditional Choctaw cuisine and crafts.

One of Mississippi’s most well-known sites is the Natchez Trace Parkway, a 444-mile route established by the Choctaw, Chickasaw and Natchez peoples thousands of years ago. Near Natchez town, look for Emerald Mound, the second-largest Native American ceremonial mound in the country, constructed about 800 years ago. All along the route, visitors can enjoy scenic drives, go horseback riding and even camp along the parkway to connect with nature.

In 2024, Tupelo, the homeland of the Chickasaw Nation, welcomes the new Chickasaw Heritage Center. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore the Chickasaw Heritage Trail along seven sites, each telling a special part of the tribe’s story and legacy still felt today in Tupelo.

Golf to Gastronomy to the Great Outdoors, Phoenix Rolls Out the Desert Carpet

You won’t need a sleeping potion here. The coyotes will howl you to sleep,” said the driver who picked me up at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport to take me to my meeting at the historic Wigwam, a storied resort I last visited as a child. I’m excited to return to experience its characteristic adobe casitas and wander through its acres of lush Sonoran Desert landscape. Despite the driver’s warnings of menacing coyotes, I gaze in joy at the otherworldliness of the anthropomorphic saguaro cacti rising like humans waving their arms to the sky. They pepper the roadside and mottle the horizon all the way to purple- hued Camelback Mountain, a supreme hiking destination that gleams in the sun. Immense pinkish boulders, purportedly eons old, litter the expanses. They look like colossal petrified tennis balls left from a rigorous rally from long ago. Suddenly, a roadrunner speeds across the highway. “Whoa,” said the driver. “At least it wasn’t a Gila monster.”

Head to Jackson Hole and Revel in the Remote Possibilities

For a city girl like me, stepping into the town square of Jackson, in northwest Wyoming, felt like walking onto a slicker set of the television show Gunsmoke. Wooden sawtooth facades surround Jackson’s Town Square (a.k.a. George Washington Memorial Park). Visitors stroll the boardwalk connecting the Western-style buildings, each with a large window displaying goods, restaurants and art galleries. Iconic arches, assembled with discarded elk antlers from nearby National Elk Refuge, perch on each corner of the town square. Stagecoaches pulled by teams of horses parade other city-dwellers around the park.

Curling Goes Beyond the Olympics

Who knew throwing a stone or rock down a sheet of ice and sweeping it into position on a target would become so popular? Sure, it is intriguing to watch the techniques curlers use to place a stone in the center of a bull’s-eye, or house, particularly when a teammate starts sweeping the ice to further direct that stone. It takes more skill than just a good throw. Strategy, mental focus, balance and, of course, teamwork, are just the beginning of the curling skills needed to win.
