From the cobblestone streets of its historic center to sun-splashed beaches, Mazatlán, Mexico, is a living canvas where art is everywhere, mixing with daily life throughout the city and inviting visitors to embark on a journey of discovery and inspiration.
Home to more than 50 art galleries and museums, Mazatlán is also the birthplace of famous Mexican artists such as Antonio López Sáenz, a distinguished painter and sculptor whose work often depicts scenes from the city, as well as Gabriel Cortés Gutiérrez, a painter who creates intricate works using his mouth due to a congenital condition called arthrogryposis. Travelers are encouraged to immerse themselves in this rich artistic ecosystem, experience local artists’ passion and talent, and discover the city’s heart and soul.
Mazatlán’s arts scene is anchored in Centro Histórico (Historic District), with most of its art walks, galleries, workshops, festivals, events, street art and sculptures within walking distance of each other. Visitors can truly discover the local arts and culture of the Mexican Pacific all within 4 square miles.
Mazatlán Art Walk was founded in 2009 by American artist Glen Rogers. The annual event is a self-guided tour on the first Friday of each month from November to April, offering visitors a chance to explore a diverse array of galleries and studios featuring local, national and international artists. Mazatlán Art Walk has grown steadily, with nearly 100 participating artists showcasing paintings, sculpture, photography, ceramics, jewelry and textiles across various locations, including restaurants and outdoor spaces like Mazatlán Center for Cultural Innovation and Venustiano Carranza Park.
Visitors can venture off the beaten path and discover hidden galleries nestled in charming courtyards or tucked away in various neighborhoods. Visitors can also witness the creative process firsthand by popping into Mazatlán’s many artist workshops and studios, engaging with local artists, and gaining insights into their techniques. Galleries like Nidart, Casa Haas and Escarabajo Azul, all within Centro Histórico, keep these local traditions alive and give visitors the chance to experience Mazatlán’s talented artists.
Throughout the year, Mazatlán offers various art festivals and events where visitors can immerse themselves in the city’s cultural calendar, which celebrates the creativity and diversity of Mazatlán’s artistic community. These gatherings provide unique opportunities to connect with artists, witness live demonstrations and purchase one-of-a-kind artwork.
The city’s famous Carnaval de Mazatlán, celebrated annually since 1898, will take place from Feb. 27 to March 1, 2025. Mazatlán’s Culture Festival runs from October all the way through December. These are the most notable Mazatlán art festivals, but many smaller festivals are also hosted throughout the entire year.
When walking through the streets of Mazatlán the walls come alive with colorful murals and unique street art installations reflecting the city’s spirit and cultural heritage. Visitors will see and most likely talk with many artists, including various local up-and-coming muralists, as well as work by more established artists such as Monumento a la Familia, an imposing bronze figure representing the typical Mazatlán family in a serene posture, sculpted by Antonio López Sáenz, Mazatlán’s most celebrated muralist and sculptor.
Mazatlán’s tourism sector actively supports its art scene, with art walk maps distributed in hotels, shops and restaurants across the city. The synergy between the local hospitality industry and arts community creates a welcoming atmosphere for travelers looking to engage with the cultural heartbeat of the city.
