Egypt topped several travel destination lists for 2019, including a destination for billionaires listing by Business Insider and other 2019 destinations predicted by news organizations such as CNN Travel. Meanwhile, Amnesty International recently called Egypt “more dangerous than ever,” and news outlets like Al Jazeera are following suit. How can you ensure your trip to Egypt is as safe as possible?

  1. Be Aware

Terrorism is a concern in Egypt, and the UK Foreign and Commonwealth office recommends travelers stay “vigilant” and follow the directions of Egyptian authorities. Trips to the tourist hubs of Cairo, Alexandria and resort stretches along the Nile and Red Sea are all considered relatively safe. Trips to the Sahara Desert and west of the Nile are discouraged, as is air travel to Sharm el Sheikh, to the point the United Kingdom suspended all direct flights to the destination.

  1. Be Careful

Normal travel safety precautions are recommended, similar to what you expect in any new city. This includes being careful of taking public transportation while traveling alone and avoiding any suspicious characters. Additionally, be careful of where you snap selfies, as it’s illegal to photograph public buildings such as police stations and military barracks.

  1. Be Discerning

Travelers who carefully pick their hotels and restaurants likely won’t have an issue with health concerns ( a new concern following the deaths of John and Susan Cooper last year). It’s recommended travelers only eat freshly prepared, cooked foods and avoid raw fruits and vegetables.

All in all, visiting Egypt is safe, so long as the right precautions are taken, none of which should impact your experience to a high degree.
