The only intact walled city in Ireland is now home to a new upscale hotel overlooking the River Foyle and iconic Peace Bridge. Ebrington Hotel features 93 guestrooms, as well as four signature suites with views of Derry and the river.
The hotel is the culmination of new construction together with the refurbishment of listed buildings on the Ebrington Barracks site and historic Clock Tower. At the luxury hotel, guests enjoy complimentary access to the spa and leisure facilities, including a steam room, sauna, hydrotherapy pool and gym.
The Ebrington Hotel’s on-site restaurant, led by one of Ireland’s most celebrated chefs, brings fresh and seasonal hand-selected ingredients to all menus. Chef Noel McMeel, known as the King of Irish Cuisine, uses only the finest locally sourced produce. The 142-seat restaurant serves an array of gourmet offerings while emphasizing sustainability.
Located less than a five-minute walk from Guildhall Square, the hotel serves as the perfect base for exploring the historic city. Derry is one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in Ireland and, today, is identified by its thick, 17th-century stone walls circling the city.
The Troubles is widely believed to have started in Derry, and travelers can visit the neighborhoods (known as The Bogside) where it all began. Murals, flags and statues denote important moments in the city and Northern Ireland’s history, as well as similar events in other countries as a show of solidarity.
Visitors can walk the entire length of the city walls to see unobstructed views of the city and beyond. The late-Victorian Guildhall welcomes visitors with an array of exhibitions and examples of period architecture. Fans of the hit television series Derry Girls can admire a large mural just inside the city walls on Orchard Street. And, into 2024, Tower Museum showcases an exhibition with props from the series.
Derry is the site of Bloody Sunday, the infamous attack by British soldiers on Irish civilians, including children. Learn about this notorious event at Museum of Free Derry, an immersive and eye-opening museum detailing the events leading up to the day, as well as the aftermath and effects felt to this day.

I’d never been so proud to rip my pants. It was obvious it was my first time ice climbing, as I showed up in my bright white Columbia ski pants, the same pair that had taken me down black diamonds in Utah and through off-piste powder in Switzerland.
