Context Travel, known for its immersive walking tours in 60-plus destinations around the globe, debuts its Upper East Side: New York’s Gilded Age Tour, just as HBO releases its new series The Gilded Age.

Joining Context’s New York City tour portfolio, this new tour takes travelers on an architectural history journey along Manhattan’s 5th Avenue, passing iconic sites like The Plaza Hotel, The Metropolitan Club, Fletcher-Sinclair mansion and more. The tour also immerses guests in an understanding of the impacts and remnants of the Gilded Age’s high society in New York, a period of immense economic change. Many of the time period’s mansions were demolished, but the tour highlights those that remain today.
The tour begins in front of The Plaza Hotel, looking at how the hotel’s upgrades and improvements remained true to the vision of the original designers. The tour then goes through Grand Army Place, Beaux-Arts architecture dating back to 1916. Learning the history of 5th Avenue’s prestigious schools and social clubs, the tour retraces the steps of the Vanderbilts, Buchanans and Roosevelts. The tour then moves to Frick Mansion, constructed 1912–1914, before ending near the Ukrainian Institute of America, in the French Renaissance style and designed by C.P.H. Gilbert.
