The charming fjord-side village of Ålesund in Norway is a popular cruise port on Nordic routes, including those offered by HX. If an overnight stay is part of an upcoming travel plan, the rooms, suites and loft suites at historic Hotel Brosundet — part of 62°NORD hotel collection — are an outstanding choice. Housed within a former fisheries warehouse, the property exudes urban luxury, from the elegantly cozy seating area in the lobby where a multistory fireplace crackles with warmth, to the Sundet fitness and wellness space, and exceptional on-site restaurants.
Seafood is the highlight at Sjøbua, where the sophisticated bistro ambience includes plenty of fresh local fare, such as brown crab dumplings, grilled langoustines from Midsund, dry-aged turbot and grilled cod tail. At Apotekergata No. 5, the menu features beloved local food traditions from the Sunnmøre region, all focusing on fresh produce and regional food producers.
Lunch menu items include bread with toppings and mango buns; the dinner menu offers bluefin tuna, grayling roe from Femunden, homemade tagliatelle and charcuterie boards.
In the wellness zone, guests can enjoy group or private yoga classes, a sauna and gym. For a sense-of-place experience, book a Sauna & Wild Swim, which includes a post-sauna plunge into the waters of Brosundet Canal. For fun, book a private bathtub filled with fresh water and positioned on a deck within the canal. Views of snowy peaks and Art Nouveau rooftops of the city offer a contemplative background, while soothing luxuries such as foaming bath suds, body scrubs and body butter from the Norwegian Sprekenhus body care brand add an additional local touch.
On Wednesdays, guests are invited to gather by the fireplace to enjoy Brosundet After Six. A local artist performs live music while dinner and wine are served in the “living room” area (a schedule of upcoming performers is available on the hotel website). Elsewhere and by reservation, cocktail tastings are hosted at Arkivet Bar, where drinks are inspired by local seasonal flavors.
Themed getaways at Hotel Brosundet include Afternoon Tea Short Breaks, with overnight accommodations in a standard double room, breakfast, and complimentary access to the wellness area and gym. Tedans — the hotel’s take on afternoon tea — is served while a pianist plays in the background. Guests can choose add-ons including Champagne in their room upon arrival, an e-bike and hiking excursion to Sukkertoppen, kayaking in Brosundet, and dinner at either Sjøbua or Apotekergata No. 5.
Curated day meetings at the property are held in state-of-the-art gathering spaces and include boat tickets from Ålesund to Devoldfabrikken, lunch, coffee, tea, water, and a selection of fruits and freshly made cookies and cakes. Optional flourishes range from overnight stays and airport transfers to guided activities and property buy-outs.

May 14, 2025Hotel Van Zandt Review
One step onto Austin’s Rainey Street and you’ll feel like you’ve joined the cool kids at the best playground in the city. Just behind the cottage bars, pint-sized skyscrapers soar. One of them, Hotel Van Zandt, the Rainey district's pièce de resistance, beckons with a song-like spirit —apropos because the independently owned property, rife with music motifs, was named after beloved singer-songwriter Townes Van Zandt. Sixteen stories high, the hotel embodies Austin’s lust for music, manifesting with a vinyl corner; trumpet chandeliers; myriad musical references; replica vintage posters in frames; and its own live music venue, which doubles as its acclaimed restaurant, Geraldine’s. Don’t miss the mesmerizing installation of colorful origami-like birds composed from vinyl records that flitter from an old phonograph.
